  History

Hosea O. Weaver started his company, now Hosea O Weaver and Sons, in 1952. He climbed aboard an old bulldozer, settled into his rickety and unyielding seat, and began pushing dirt, building fish ponds and clearing land for his customers.

Hosea's business grew and prospered because, " I paid attention to all the mistakes I saw my competitors making and then tried to eliminate them from my business. I made sure to provide my customers with quality service and quality products. That's how you get repeat business."

Paul and Calvin Weaver have worked for their father for as long as each can remember. Hosea O. Weaver and Sons, Inc. began operations in 1973 with the help of Hosea. In 1985, Paul and Calvin purchased their father's company and merged it into theirs. In December 2001, Calvin Weaver retired and Paul assumed complete control of Weaver and Sons.

Weaver and Sons purchased its first hot mix asphalt plant on Schillingers Road in 1983. Two more plants followed, one in Theodore, and the other in Whatley, Alabama. The plant on Schillinger Road was relocated to Cut Off Road, near downtown Mobile, and replaced by a new state-of-the-art Astec Turbo 400 Drum Plant in 1999.

Hosea Weaver and Sons was the first in the area to invest in a asphalt-milling machine, which removes old asphalt, commonly known as "rap."

Hosea Weaver and Sons, employs a local labor force of over 185, and most of Weaver's personnel have been with the company for over 15 years. Paul Weaver is proud to be able to say that, " the majority of the money we spend is recycled back into the local economy which helps fuel our community's growth and development."

The job that positioned Hosea Weaver and Sons at the top of their profession in the region was the $30 million renovation of Interstate 10 from the George Wallace Tunnel to Interstate 65 in 1990. Weaver's commitment was $12 million. The project consisted of additional lanes inside and out, removing the old concrete roadway and replacing it with new asphalt. This project was different in that the old concrete road way was chopped, crushed, sized and recycled back into the new asphalt mix making Hosea Weaver and Sons the first area contractor to recycle concrete into the asphalt.

Paul Weaver has two special recipes. One mixes limestone, granite, gravel, sand and liquid asphalt to create asphalt. The other blends vision, determination, skill, honesty and quality to produce success.
